1.         What is pet sitting?

Pet sitting is a specialty in-home pet care service for you and your pet(s).  A pet sitter visits your pet(s) in your home one to two times per day while you are away, working or vacationing. The sitter spends approximately 30 - 45 minutes and provides love and attention, feeding, replenishing water, and exercising your pet(s).

 2.        How does pet sitting benefit our pet(s)?

Your pet(s) receive(s) individualized care based on specific needs, including medications. The sitter learns the family’s routine and follows your instructions to give your pet(s) the best care possible in your absence.  Many pets do not enjoy being boarded. Most pets are very comfortable in their own home following their usual schedule.

 3.         What are the advantages of pet sitting over other alternatives? - eg. Kennels, neighbours

Your pets are already in their own home, so you do not take time to transport them to a facility. They follow their regular routine and diet; avoid exposure to illness; do not need injections required for boarding; and have their familiar toys, bedding and bowls at hand.  A neighbor or relative may suddenly have to cancel plans to care for your pet(s) or may not even show up in some cases leaving your pet stressed, dehydrated or hungry. We are professionals and we have a contract with you to perform services exactly as planned.

4.        Is boarding a good choice for pet care while I am away?

Sometimes we recommend boarding for pets. Under some circumstances pets need extra close supervision – such as pets post surgery and/or very ill.  Some pets should be boarded at a veterinarian for observation.

5.         Is Southpaws Pet Sitting Services bonded and insured?

Yes. Everyone involved with our service must be bonded and insured.

6.         What references can you supply?

Upon request, we will provide references from our clients.  We are also a member in good standing of Pet Sitters International.

7.         What additional services are provided?

At no additional cost, plants are watered, mail and newspapers are brought in, recyclables and trash are put out, and security checks performed.  We also administer medications as directed by your veterinarian.

8.         Is pet sitting expensive compared to other alternatives?

Pet sitting is not comparable to other pet care alternatives in that we provide a one-on-one personalized service.  Our fees are reasonable, especially for multiple pet households. Often pet sitting is less expensive than boarding.

9.         What happens if my pet gets sick while I'm away?

We always observe pets carefully for signs of illness. In an acute emergency, we will transport your pet to the veterinarian immediately.  Otherwise, we will call you first.  At the interview, a form is completed giving us permission to have your pet treated by your veterinarian. In case we cannot reach him/her, we have a vet on call.

10.        What happens if the pet sitter cannot perform scheduled services?

We always have back up sitters. There is no worry about our staff not showing up on any given day.

11.        What if there is a delay in our return from vacation?

We will continue visits until the client returns home.

12.        How much notice is needed for pet sitting services?

We ask you to schedule as soon as possible unless your trip is far in the future.  We try to accommodate established clients on short notice, however, we cannot compromise the quality of our work in order to accommodate last minute scheduling.  If you call for same day service, an extra fee may be charged.

13.        What is the first step in reserving pet sitting services?

Call our office during daytime hours to make an appointment for an interview.  After checking to make sure we are available for the dates needed, we will schedule an interview and come to your home to complete the necessary paperwork and contract.  We meet you and your pets in their own environment and become familiar with your home and routine of care.  You are welcome to ask questions and the interview is at no obligation.
